Sunflower

The sunflower is an annual plant in the family Asteraceae and native to the America. Sunflowers in the bud stage exhibit heliotropism. At good sunrise, the faces of most sunflowers are turned towards the east. Over the course of the day, they follow the sun from east to west, while at night they return to an eastward orientation. Mathematical model of floret arrangement

A model for the pattern of florets in the head of a sunflower was proposed by H Vogel. This is expressed in polar coordinates

r = c \sqrt{n},
\theta = n \times 137.5^{\circ},

where θ is the angle, r is the radius or distance from the center, and n is the index number of the floret and c is a constant scaling factor. It is a form of Fermat's spiral. The angle 137.5° is related to the golden ratio and gives a close packing of florets. This model has been used to produce computer graphics representations of sunflowers.

Cowpea

Cowpeas are one of the most important food legume crops in the semi arid tropics covering Asia, Africa, southern Europe and Central and South America.

Kingdom:Plantae
Division:Magnoliophyta
Class:Magnoliopsida
Order:Fabales
Family:Fabaceae
Subfamily:Faboideae
Genus:Vigna
Species:V. unguiculata

A drought tolerant and warm weather crop, cowpeas are well-adapted to the drier regions of the tropics, where other food legumes do not perform well. It also has the useful ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen through its root nodules.
